If we’re lucky, we get to a place in our lives – for just a quick moment, where we are happy. Where we get this feeling inside that we are ok, and have the things in life we’ve always wanted.
This isn’t tangible.. it’s just a feeling.
That feeling comes from your instinct telling you that for this very moment you have the right combination of wants, needs and desires checked off just enough that you can take a deep breath and feel some inner peace.
That’s not an easy nor a frequent feeling to get.
If that feeling is brought forth from real needs and wants… wholesome and ideal – then what can follow is often paralyzing.
The fear of loss.
You’re stuck in this balancing act… where for just that moment you have it all.. as if you’re balancing a tower of champagne glasses and everything is lined up and settled and fits just right… but if you move or even flinch the whole thing can come crashing down.
That feeling is what paralyzes people. It’s a subconscious reaction, probably instinctual that’s brought down from thousands of years of hunter/ gatherer influence, where a predator might have seen you – but if you don’t move you’ll be fine, and one false move and they’ll zero in on you and take it out.
For whatever reason – freezing also feels like staying safe. In this moment you have what you want… so don’t fuck it up.
The problem is freezing like that only works for a few moments. Whether you’re soaking in the good times, holding on to the tower of champagne glasses, or trying to evade the gaze of a hunter – that only lasts for so long.
At some point, as time surely passes, you have to move. Fatigue sets in, circumstances and elements change, and therefore your need to change with it becomes more and more important as time goes on.
Let me repeat – you need to change as time goes on.
You need to improve, you need to reinforce, you need to secure those things you value so much if you want to keep them.
If you dont, you’ll fall over, get taken out or passed over.
That’s why they say you’re either moving forward or moving backward. The backward part is relative to everything else that is still moving forward.
This is why people say “peace through strength”, or “freedom through discipline”. Peace and freedom have to be earned and protected.
So let me ask you a few things…
What’s in your champagne glasses? What are you balancing that you value so much?
What do you have to do to make sure you can keep balancing them and keep them full? What do you need to do to keep your balance, your strength and keep it all together?
Now ask yourself how you can do more of those things that you need to do.
Realize that staying where you are, comfortable with what you have is a position that slips away, bit by bit every single day- until you lose it.
The world is in motion, and so it everything in it, so you need to outpace it and stay ahead if you truly care about ever having those moments again, and providing as many of those moments to the people you love.
God Speed.
